Global Events List | Medical Design Technology Calendar | September 25, 2014 Washington Business Journal | October 3, 2014 The Belgium Institute for Pediatric Surgical Innovation at Children’s National Health System is hosting its Second Annual Pediatric Surgical Innovation Symposium, “Lessons from Drugs to Devices: A Pediatric Perspective,” a one-day forum bringing together key leaders from the National Institutes of Health, the Food and Drug Administration, medical device industry, law firms, pediatric societies and advocacy groups, along with scientists, engineers, clinicians and policy makers to examine and discuss the challenges surrounding pediatric surgical innovation and the need for greater innovation. The keynote speaker is Dr. Margaret A. Hamburg, the commissioner of the FDA.

Medical Device Daily | October 29, 2014 The Belgium Institute for Pediatric Surgical Innovation (Washington) recently announced the winners of its second annual pediatric surgical innovation contest, but one of the two winning entries was not a surgical device despite the name of the contest. Conspicuous in their absences were the heavy hitters of the world of med tech, but Peter Kim, VP of the Belgium Institute told Medical Device Daily that the reason that smaller companies and university researchers drive pediatric device development is “the bigger companies wait for the risk to be de-risked.”

Velano Vascular, Philadelphia, PA, and San Francisco, CA, developed a novel innovation that enables safe, effective needle-free blood draws for hospitalized children. REBIScan, Cambridge, MA, presented a handheld vision scanner to eradicate amblyopia, or lazy eye, a common childhood ailment.
